Mukono District Local Government has welcomed the launch of a new digital health initiative aimed at improving access to essential health services and strengthening accountability in the sector.
The initiative, introduced by Maisha Meds in collaboration with the Ministry of Health under the Access to Medicines through Digital Systems (AMDIS) program, was highlighted during a half-day stakeholder engagement on malaria management, HIV prevention, and family planning.
The program seeks to integrate private health facilities into the government’s health information systems, allowing better tracking of services and improving monitoring and decision-making. Patients accessing services in private health centers will also benefit from prevention services such as PrEP for HIV, malaria testing, and referrals to public facilities when advanced care is needed.
The Officials explained that AMDIS, launched on 31st October by the Ministry of Health, is designed to enhance the availability, quality, and affordability of medicines while increasing transparency in the distribution process.
Dr. Kadama Herbert, representing the Ministry of Health, emphasized that the program addresses challenges faced by populations who prefer private healthcare and stressed the need for district leaders to support private providers and promote data sharing.
Hon. Nassazi Martha, District Councilor for Nakifuma Naggalama Town Council and Secretary for Health and Gender, commended Maisha Meds and the Ministry of Health for bringing subsidized medicines closer to communities.
The Vice Chairperson Hon. Jorem Kabali Kimera, representing the District Chairperson, reiterated the importance of partnerships that expand access to affordable healthcare while urging continued monitoring to ensure the program reaches the people effectively.
Representing the Office of the President, The Deputy RDC Muyambi Moses praised the collaboration and emphasized the critical need to disseminate information to grassroots communities. He reaffirmed the commitment of local leaders to support and promote the initiative to ensure it translates into tangible improvements in health service delivery.
The AMDIS program marks a significant step toward bridging the gap between public and private healthcare, improving access to life-saving treatment, and enhancing preventive services for residents of Mukono District. Leaders and stakeholders expressed optimism that, with proper implementation and community engagement, the initiative will significantly improve healthcare outcomes across the district.
