Masaka– The prosecution of Galiwango Musa, alias Kawesi Dauda, a resident of Ntuuma village, Kitanda Sub-county, Bukomansibi District, ended successfully on Thursday 21st May 2026, at the High Court of Uganda at Masaka, with the presiding Judge, His Lordship Charles Kasibayo, sentencing Galiwango Musa to 45 years’ imprisonment for each of the two counts of murder and 25 years’ imprisonment for aggravated robbery.
The evidence presented in court by the prosecution revealed that on the 1st day of January 2018, Galiwango Musa and Kidawalime Muhammed (now deceased), with others still at large, invaded Kyabagoma village in Bukomansimbi District armed with sticks.
They went to the home of Ssebugwawo Denis Lumala, a retired police officer, banged on the door, and gained entry. Galiwango found Ssebugwawo and his wife in their room and asked him to give them money, or else he would be killed. Ssebugwawo asked them to check the pocket of his trousers; they found only 38,000/=, which they took.
Ssebugwawo, unaware that Galiwango’s colleagues were outside surrounding his home, grabbed the accused, who caused an alarm, and his colleagues rushed to the bedroom and severely assaulted Ssebugwawo together with Galiwango while asking for more money until he became unconscious in a pool of blood. Galiwango then asked family members for Ssebugwawo’s phone, which was handed to him, and they left. Ssebugwawo was rushed to the hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.
During the scuffle, one Nabifo Nancy, a granddaughter of Ssebugwawo, was severely assaulted by the assailants. Nabifo suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Masaka Hospital, where she died a week later.
Galiwango and Kiddawalime were arrested by the Police, confessed to having committed these offences and many others in the Masaka Region, and were charged in court.
However, Kiddawalime escaped from court and was killed during another robbery, leaving only Galiwango in the case.
Mr. Brian Kalinaki, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions/Regional Officer, Masaka, prosecuted the case.
Justice demands accountability for such deliberate criminal acts. The successful prosecution of this case has not only secured justice for the victims and their families but also reaffirmed the rule of law.
