Kampala– President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Sunday evening announced the postponement of the long awaited annual Martyrs day celebrations which has been scheduled to take place on 3rd June.
In his statement, President Museveni noted that ths decision was reached after consultations with the national epidemic response task force and religious leaders.
“This decision was made because Uganda Uganda receives thousands of pilgrims annually from Eastern Congo, which is currently experiencing an Ebola outbreak. To safeguard everyone’s lives, it is essential that this important event be post poned.” Read part of the Statement
He also encouraged those who had begun their journey to return home, continue observing the precautionary measures, report anyone who is sick, and encourage those who are ill to seek medical care.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) by 16 May 2026, eight laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases and 80 suspected deaths have been reported in Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo across at least three health zones, including Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu. In addition, two laboratory confirmed cases (including one death) with no apparent link to each other have been reported in Kampala, Uganda, within 24 hours of each other, on 15 and 16 May 2026, among two individuals travelling from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
