Nakifuma-Naggalama Town Council has conducted a massive Community Sanitation Drive, locally known as Bulungi Bwansi, in Nankulabye Parish, bringing together town council civil servants, pupils, and community members in a joint effort to promote cleanliness and prevent disease outbreaks.
The exercise was led by the Principal Town Clerk, Mr. Kizito Walubi Francis, in line with government directives encouraging community participation in general cleaning under the Local Government Act.
Mr. Walubi emphasized that the sanitation drive is part of implementing government policy that calls upon local governments to mobilize communities for collective responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.
He noted that the town council resolved to begin the exercise in Nankulabye Parish before rolling it out to other parishes within the town council.
“The major aim of this community work is to reduce disease outbreaks that result from poor sanitation,” Mr. Walubi stated.
He further cautioned residents who fail to comply with sanitation standards, stressing that the Public Health Act will be enforced against individuals who neglect proper sanitation practices.
Hon. Nantale Ruth, the Woman Councilor and secretary for Gender and Health in Nakifuma-Naggalama Town Council, revealed that the initiative was introduced by district officials as a strategy to strengthen sanitation standards across communities.
According to Hon. Ruth, the sanitation drive will now be conducted at least once every month in each parish within the town council.
She emphasized that sanitation must begin at the household level before extending to the wider community. She also thanked the district leaders, town council officials, the Town Clerk, Community Development Officers (CDOs), and residents for ensuring the smooth running of the activity.
Hon. Kironde Francis, Chairperson for Works and Technical Services as well as Area Councilor, expressed his appreciation for the community’s participation. He noted that while the council invests significant effort in setting up and maintaining roads, their sustainability largely depends on community involvement.
He urged residents of Nankulabye to maintain roads, especially during the rainy season, by regularly clearing drainage channels to prevent flooding and road damage.
Ms. Naligwa Mable, the Parish Chief of Nankulabye, commended the Town Clerk and local leaders for spearheading the initiative. She called upon mothers to properly dispose of baby diapers and encouraged households to consistently practice good sanitation habits to maintain a healthy environment.
Ms. Nakiwala Claire, Chairperson of Francis Village in Nankulabye Parish, also applauded both the community and leaders for actively participating in the exercise. She urged residents across the town council to regularly clean drainage channels, collect garbage, and properly dispose of waste, including burning rubbish where appropriate, to ensure a clean and safe environment.
The Community Sanitation Drive reflects Nakifuma-Naggalama Town Council’s commitment to improving public health, preventing disease outbreaks, and fostering a culture of shared responsibility among residents. With continued collaboration between leaders and the community, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance sanitation standards across the town council.
