Kalungu — Hon. Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu has said he is not troubled by the decision of the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court ordering a recount of votes that led to his declaration as the winner of the Kalungu West parliamentary seat.

Hon. Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu.

Speaking after the ruling, Ssewungu noted that as a High Court advocate, he respects the court’s decision and welcomed the fact that the recount will be conducted within Kalungu.

“As an advocate of the High Court, I respect the court’s decision. The good thing is that His Worship the Chief Magistrate has allowed the recount to take place in Kalungu. I appeal to the people of Kalungu to remain calm and avoid abusive language,” Ssewungu said.

He added that he has a clear record both politically and legislatively, noting that during his time in Parliament, he has been involved in making the very laws now guiding the electoral process.

Ssewungu urged residents to remain peaceful ahead of the recount scheduled for Friday, stressing that the outcome should be accepted by all parties.

“Let us be present on Friday, remain peaceful, and by the end of the day, one of us will be jubilating,” he remarked.

He further emphasized that regardless of the outcome, life will go on, adding that if he loses the recount, Ismael Semakula will be his representative in Parliament, and if he retains victory, he will equally represent Semakula and all voters of Kalungu West.

The recount follows a petition filed at the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court by Ismael Semakula, the first runner-up, challenging the results on which the Electoral Commission based its declaration of Ssewungu as the elected Member of Parliament for Kalungu West.
