Mukono District Local Government has taken another significant step towards improving maternal healthcare after officials and residents of Kabanga Parish officially handed over land to the district for the construction of a modern maternity ward.
The handover ceremony was led by the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Mr. Henry Ddamba, who received the land ownership documents from local leaders on behalf of Mukono District Local Government. The project marks a successful partnership between the local community and the district aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare services for mothers and children.
The initiative began when residents of Kabanga Parish mobilized themselves and started constructing a small health facility to serve the growing population. However, due to limited financial resources, the community resolved to partner with Mukono District Local Government to support the expansion of the facility into a fully-fledged maternity ward.
Speaking during the handover, LC II Chairperson Mr. Katende Kasimu expressed gratitude to the district leadership for embracing the community’s initiative. He noted that the official handover of the land and supporting documents demonstrates the community’s commitment to improving healthcare services and ensuring expectant mothers receive quality medical care closer to their homes.
He said the construction of the maternity ward will greatly benefit residents who have for many years travelled long distances to access maternal health services.
Mukono District Health Officer, Dr Mulindwa Stephen explained that the existing health structure was too small to adequately serve the increasing number of mothers seeking maternity services. He revealed that Mukono District plans to invest over UGX 500 million in the construction of the new maternity ward, with the project expected to be completed within the current Financial Year.
The District Health Officer further assured residents that government health facilities across Mpatta Sub-county have been strengthened through the deployment of qualified health workers, provision of ambulances, and regular supply of essential medicines to improve healthcare delivery.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Administrative Officer Mr. Henry Ddamba commended the people of Kabanga Parish for demonstrating exemplary leadership and commitment towards community development by acquiring and donating land for the project.
He noted that the district has held several engagements with community leaders and residents to ensure the project becomes a reality and praised the local leadership for initiating the process of purchasing the land before seeking district support.
Mr. Ddamba emphasized that true leadership is demonstrated through development-oriented initiatives that directly improve the lives of citizens. He expressed confidence that Kabanga’s partnership with Mukono District Local Government will inspire other communities to mobilize local resources and collaborate with government in delivering essential public services.
The CAO reaffirmed the district’s commitment to ensuring the maternity ward is constructed according to the required standards and completed within the planned timeframe so that mothers and newborns can access safe, quality, and affordable healthcare services.
