KAMPALA – The Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere, has issued a pastoral directive outlining strict health and safety measures for the celebration of Uganda Martyrs Day on June 3, 2026, urging Catholics to commemorate the feast responsibly while observing Ebola prevention guidelines.
In a letter dated May 26, 2026, addressed to parish priests, religious men and women, and the lay faithful of the Kampala Archdiocese, Archbishop Ssemogerere emphasized the need for prayerful celebrations under the theme “Alive in You and Me”, while adhering to public health directives aimed at preventing the spread of Ebola.
The Archbishop encouraged Christians to actively participate in novena prayers, which commenced on May 24, from their homes, Small Christian Communities, and local parishes in an orderly manner.
However, he directed that there should be no mobilization of pilgrims or large novena gatherings at Namugongo or other martyrs’ shrines. Parishes were also advised against inviting Christians from other areas for centralized novena celebrations.
Regarding the main Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations on June 3, Archbishop Ssemogerere instructed all parishes within the archdiocese to hold the liturgy locally within their communities. The celebrations will follow the liturgical program and readings prepared by the Kasese Diocese, which is serving as the animating diocese for this year’s event.
“The celebrations should be accorded the solemnity and pastoral importance of a Sunday celebration,” the directive states.
To enhance public safety, the Archbishop announced several mandatory health measures for all churches and worship spaces. These include the provision of hand washing facilities with clean water and soap at entry and exit points, availability of hand sanitizers, and temperature screening using infrared thermometers.
Church leaders have also been instructed to ensure proper ventilation, regulate attendance to prevent overcrowding, and maintain physical distancing. Ebola prevention notices are to be displayed in both English and local languages wherever possible.
The directive further prohibits handshakes, hugging, and unnecessary physical contact during worship. Ministers and pastoral agents have been advised to avoid laying hands on congregants during prayers.
The Archbishop also urged anyone feeling unwell to remain at home and seek medical attention from the nearest health facility.
“These measures are intended to safeguard human life while enabling us to honor the heroic witness of the Uganda Martyrs in faith and unity,” Archbishop Ssemogerere said, calling upon the faithful to continue praying for the nation, the sick, healthcare workers, and God’s protection over communities.
He concluded by invoking the intercession of the Uganda Martyrs and encouraging Catholics to celebrate the feast in a spirit of faith, responsibility, and solidarity.
