Gaba– Hundreds of residents from across Kampala, Wakiso, and surrounding districts have gathered at Gaba Community Centre to follow a public court hearing involving Christopher Okello Onyum, a 39-year-old man accused of murdering four children from Gaba Day Care Centre.
Appearing before High Court Judge Komuhangi Khaukha, Okello denied all four counts of murder read against him.
As the charges constitute a capital offence, Okello is represented by defence lawyers Mr. Richard Kumbuga and Ms. Stella Awello, who are state-facilitated. When asked by the judge whether he recognized his legal team, Okello confirmed that he had met them and acknowledged them as his lawyers.
The prosecution team is led by Chief State Attorneys Mr. Jonathan Muwaganya and Ms. Anna Kiiza.
During the proceedings, the prosecution submitted postmortem reports for the four deceased children as part of the evidence they intend to rely on. The reports indicate that each child sustained deep neck wounds, which were identified as the cause of death.
Court proceedings are ongoing, with prosecution witnesses expected to begin testifying at any moment.
Okello is accused of committing the offences on April 2 at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, located in Ggaba Trading Zone, Ggaba Parish, Makindye Division in Kampala District. It is alleged that, with malice aforethought, he caused the deaths of Eteku Gideon, Keith Agenorwoth Otim, Sseruyange Ignatius, and Odeke Ryan.
