Wakiso District – Road construction projects worth UGX 110 billion have officially commenced under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP), marking a major step toward improving transport infrastructure in the rapidly expanding metropolitan region.
The projects were officially launched on Tuesday at Jjanyi Church of Uganda Primary School in Kajjansi Town Council, where leaders announced that several key roads will be upgraded to bitumen standard.
The roads earmarked for upgrade include Seguku – Nalumunye – Bandwe – Kinaawa – Kyengera Road (8.9 km) and Seguku Link (0.9 km), which have been contracted to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. The Namulanda – Bweya – Kajjansi Road (7.5 km) project has been awarded to China Wu Yi Construction Co. Ltd..
The Chief Administrative Officer of Wakiso District, Jude Mark Bukenya, revealed that the Namulanda – Bweya – Kajjansi Road will cost UGX 57 billion, while the Seguku – Nalumunye – Kyengera Road project will cost UGX 56 billion, both VAT inclusive.
Bukenya applauded Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for prioritizing infrastructure development and urged contractors to deliver high-quality work that meets the expected standards.
The Under Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Monica Edemachu, called on contractors to employ local residents, prioritize safety—especially for children near construction zones, and ensure the projects are completed within the 18-month contract period.
According to District Engineer Ndiwalana Godfrey, the upgraded roads will feature a 3-inch asphalt base, street lighting, covered drainage systems, and pedestrian walkways, and are designed to last approximately 25 years.
Project supervision will be undertaken by Resident Engineer Ariho Samuel of Nova Consult.
Representing the Minister for Local Government Raphael Magezi, the Commissioner for Urban Administration, Charles Magumba>, said the projects will enhance connectivity and support urban expansion around Kampala, urging residents to protect the new infrastructure.
The Wakiso District LC5 Chairperson, Matia Lwanga Bwanika, asked contractors to prioritize forward maintenance and tasked LC1 leaders with registering youth for employment opportunities during the construction works.
Meanwhile, Deputy RDC Mubiru Patrick encouraged residents to support government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model and the Emyooga Program, while commending national leadership for continued infrastructure development in the district.
The road projects are funded by the World Bank and Agence Française de Développement, and are expected to significantly improve mobility, service delivery, and urban development across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
