Kampala– Renowned Television presenter, Douglas Lwanga has cautioned school proprietors and administrators against involving learners in social media content without proper consent from parents or guardians.
As schools increasingly turn to digital platforms to boost visibility and market their institutions, Lwanga advised that clear and documented permission must be obtained before filming or publishing any content featuring pupils or students.
“Many schools are creating social media content featuring their pupils and students, mainly for marketing and visibility. While this trend continues to grow, here’s a simple piece of advice: ensure that students or their guardians sign media release forms that clearly grant permission to film and publish content online,” he noted.
The popular NBS Television presenter emphasized that not all parents are comfortable with their children appearing on social media platforms. He warned that failure to secure proper consent could expose schools to legal consequences.
“Not every parent is comfortable with their child being featured on social media, and some may take legal action against the school if proper consent has not been obtained,” he added.
His remarks come at a time when educational institutions are leveraging platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to showcase academic performance, co-curricular activities, and school culture in a bid to attract new learners.
Education stakeholders say while digital marketing offers opportunities for growth and brand visibility, institutions must prioritize child protection policies, privacy rights, and legal compliance.
Lwanga’s message serves as a reminder that as schools embrace the digital era, safeguarding the rights and dignity of learners should remain paramount.
