Masaka– The Catholic community of Roman Catholic Diocese of Masaka is mourning the death of Kayira Frugensio, the first Ssabasomesa (Head of Catechists) of the diocese, remembered for his dedicated service and commitment to strengthening catechetical work.
Born in 1945, Kayira Frugensio devoted much of his life to the Church, serving as head of St. Michael Catechists Association from 1974 to 1992. During his 18-year tenure, he worked tirelessly to improve the standards, welfare, and coordination of catechists across the diocese, earning respect for his humility and servant leadership.
He will be fondly remembered for his remarkable act of generosity when he provided bicycles to fellow catechists. The gesture significantly improved their mobility, enabling them to reach distant communities more efficiently in their mission of spreading the Gospel.
Kayira was also the father of Rev. Fr. Kabanda Charise, continuing a family legacy of faithful service to the Church.
The Requiem Mass was presided over by the Ordinary of Masaka Diocese, Bishop Severus Jjumba, who praised the deceased for his unwavering commitment, dedication, and immense contribution to the growth of the Church in the region. Bishop Jjumba described him as a pillar in the formation and empowerment of catechists, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire generations.
The Diocese has called upon the faithful to emulate Kayira Frugensio’s spirit of generosity, dedication, and steadfast faith.
