MBARARA – The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) on Friday accorded a 13-gun salute to Major General Francis Takiriwa as he was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Rutooma, Kashari County, Mbarara District.
The solemn ceremony drew senior military officers, political leaders, clergy, family members and residents, all paying tribute to a man remembered for his courage, discipline and unwavering commitment to national service.
Representing the Chief of Defence Forces, the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, described the late Takiriwa as a natural leader whose distinguished career was marked by resilience, professionalism and exemplary performance.
“He earned admiration not only from his seniors and peers but also from his subordinates. He was calm and amicable, blending military discipline with public service,” the message read. “He leaves behind a legacy of sacrifice, professionalism, loyalty and dedicated service to the nation.”
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Lt Gen Joseph Musanyufu, said the late general’s life was defined not merely by longevity but by impact.
“Loss is measured by life’s worth and by impact. Every human being is precious. Maj Gen Takiriwa lived his life positively and left a lasting legacy. As human beings, we come and must go; the difference is when and how. What matters most is what one leaves behind,” Musanyufu said.
He noted that beyond his immediate family, whom he cherished deeply, Maj Gen Takiriwa leaves behind a record of service and dedication that will endure within the UPDF and the nation at large.
On behalf of the family, Ms Florence Sanyu described her brother as a hardworking and dedicated officer who rose through the ranks on merit over four decades of service.
“He was not handpicked; he earned every promotion through effort, energy and commitment,” she said.
She also expressed gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF and the military leadership for the support extended to the late general during his 40 years of service and throughout his illness.
Maj Gen Takiriwa’s burial was marked by full military honours, including the ceremonial gun salute, symbolising the nation’s recognition of his contribution to Uganda’s security and development.
