Kampala– The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has issued a warning to all individuals that are not satisfied with the results from the previous elections to use the legally recommended avenues instead of using media platforms.
“UCC has observed a concerning trend where unsuccessful candidates in parliamentary and local government elections misuse radio and television platforms to dispute officially declared election results through sensational and unverified claims.” Reads part of the statement issued by Hon. Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director UCC
He reminded the public and broadcasters that the Electoral Commission is the sole constitutional authority responsible for declaring election results in Uganda. “Those dissatisfied with election outcomes must seek redress through the courts by filing petitions within the legally set timelines.”
Nyombi emphasized that, Broadcast media should not serve as alternative venues for litigating election disputes. Broadcasting unverified results, parallel tallies, or speculative allegations is unlawful and can lead to public panic, confusion, and a loss of trust in democratic institutions.
“ It may also incite unrest and harm Uganda’s democratic reputation. All broadcasters are hereby directed to refrain from airing content that disputes declared election results without verification. This includes prohibiting programs that promote unofficial results or unsubstantiated claims.”
The Executive Director further called for Strict editorial oversight is required to ensure that all election-related information is verified against official Electoral
“UCC will take decisive enforcement action against any broadcaster violating these laws or guidelines. Media owners, editors, and the general public are urged to use broadcast media responsibly and in a manner that promotes national unity and democratic integrity.”
This has come at a time when various people who contested on various Electoral positions in various parts of the country are threatening to drag the Electoral Commission to court on allegations of declaring those that didn’t win.
