Kampala– The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has demanded the immediate withdrawal of police personnel deployed at the Magere residence of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, citing continued defiance of a High Court order.

In the letter signed by Anthony Asiimwe, ULS Vice President, addressed to the Uganda Police Force, ULS said the ongoing police deployment at Kyagulanyi’s home in Wakiso District amounts to unlawful confinement and a violation of his constitutional rights.

The lawyers’ body referenced High Court Miscellaneous Cause No. 16 of 2021, Robert Kyagulanyi and Barbara Kyagulanyi v Attorney General & 2 Others, in which court held that the continued and indefinite restriction of Kyagulanyi to his residence was unlawful and infringed on his right to personal liberty.

“The current police deployment bars access to essential supplies, including food and other basic necessities, thereby subjecting the family to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment,” ULS stated.

According to the Law Society, the police action violates several rights guaranteed under the 1995 Constitution, including the right to personal liberty, freedom of movement, and the right to an adequate standard of living.

ULS reminded the Uganda Police Force that it is duty-bound to act within the confines of the law, respect court orders, and uphold the human rights and dignity of all persons without discrimination.

“Continued defiance of a High Court ruling undermines the rule of law and constitutes an abuse of judicial power,” the letter reads.

The Society has therefore called on police to immediately withdraw all officers deployed at the Magere residence, cease any unlawful restrictions on access, and ensure full compliance with the High Court decision and constitutional standards.

The letter was also copied to the Attorney General.

ULS expressed confidence that the Uganda Police Force would take urgent corrective action and reaffirm its commitment to constitutionalism, legality, and respect for human rights.

The letter had receipt stamps from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Internal Affairs dated 30th January 2026.
