Old Kampala- His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, on Monday, December 1, 2025, hosted a delegation of four senior officials from Makerere University Business School (MUBS) at his office. The team was led by Prof. Musa B.Moya, PhD, Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Science Education and head of ICT and Statistics at MUBS Nakawa, located on the outskirts of Kampala City.

The delegation had been dispatched by the University administration under Prof. Moses Muhwezi, the Principal, as a gesture of goodwill after learning that the Mufti had been unwell.

The officials had earlier prepared to welcome him for his first-ever official visit to the MUBS campus on Friday, November 28, 2025, but the engagement did not take place due to his health condition.

“Your Eminence, on behalf of the entire MUBS staff, we have been sent to come to check on you since we were informed that you were feeling unwell was a reason you didn’t manage to visit us as we had eagerly anticipated last Friday on Nov 28th 2025,” Prof. Moya remarked.

Prof. Moya added that the news of the Mufti’s planned visit had generated great excitement across the MUBS community, not only among Muslims but also members of other faiths and their leaders. He praised the Mufti for his tremendous contribution to the Muslim fraternity since assuming office in the year 2000.

“We really pay our profound tribute to you for the massive developments the UMSC has managed to attain despite sharp challenges during your era in terms of spiritual growth, expansion of its resource base, the magnificent Mosque and the National headquarters and your wise leadership has made us proud of our faith.

We had planned to have you tour and bless our projects. So have decided to physically present some to you of our gifts we had organized for you on that day including a cake,” Prof. Moya further remarked, drawing smiles from the Mufti and other dignitaries present.

Those in attendance included Their Eminencies Sheikh Muhammad Waiswa, the Deputy Mufti, Dr. Sheikh Hafiz Muhammad Harunah Bukenya, the 2nd Deputy Mufti, and Hon. Haji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi, the UMSC Secretary General.

On his part, Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa — who has served as the MUBS Imam for over twenty years — thanked the Mufti for spotting and recommending him for the post. He disclosed that his tenure had expired on November 30, 2025.

“Soon University Human Resource Manager will formally write to the Mufti notifying about the vacancy, meanwhile, Sheikh Jamir Nsubuga, who has been my assistant is now in charge of Imam’s office,” he said, while introducing Sheikh Nsubuga to the Mufti.

Sheikh Waiswa reiterated Prof. Moya’s remarks, noting that the entire University staff had organized a memorable reception for the Mufti, dressing in their best attire and preparing to showcase the major milestones achieved under his tenure. These included the construction of the University Mosque, the first of its kind, capable of accommodating over one thousand worshippers, with a strong foundation designed to support additional storeys if required in the future.

He also highlighted a three-floor Youth Centre Building, built as a multi-purpose training facility offering a range of programs, including a language laboratory for international languages, leadership courses, small enterprise skills, marital counselling, and more. Sheikh Waiswa concluded by thanking the MUBS staff for their cooperation throughout his service.

In his welcoming response, the Mufti expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the visit and clarified why he missed the earlier engagement.

“I expressed my gratitude to the Principal and entire staff for the event. So I will find time in near future to come for a visit,” he promised, explaining that his absence was due to physical weakness resulting from several inland travels and recent engagements.

The Mufti nostalgically recalled his long acquaintance with Sheikh Waiswa shortly after the latter graduated from the Madinah Islamic University.

At that time, Sheikh Waiswa had been recruited as a teacher at Bugembe Islamic Institute, where he taught Sheikh Mubaje, then an A-Level student.

“So Sheikh Waiswa has been in academia for a very long time where he served with a distinction and it was major reason why UMSC recommended him to be Imam at the MUBS,” Sheikh Mubaje said, before requesting Prof. Moya to convey his gratitude to the University staff for the cooperation they extended to Sheikh Waiswa during his tenure.

The Mufti further implored Sheikh Jamir Nsubuga, now the Acting Imam, to ensure continuity of all programs and initiatives established by his predecessor and advised him to regularly consult Sheikh Waiswa as he executes his duties.
