Kampala– The Electoral Commission (EC), has condemned recent incidents of violence that have marred the ongoing campaign period, involving direct attacks on Candidates and supporters by Security Agencies in the country.

In a statement issued last evening, the Commission expressed deep concern over violent episodes that occurred on Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi’s Campaigns on Friday, November 28, which resulted in the death of one person and left several others injured. The Commission said such incidents undermine the country’s democratic principles and should not be tolerated.

“This is unfortunate and regrettable for a campaign exercise that has been, and remains, largely peaceful across the country,” reads part of the statement signed by Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson Electoral Commission.

The Commission noted that the current electoral process has drawn massive participation, with more than 83,000 candidates competing for over 45,000 elective positions, ranging from sub-county council seats to the presidency.

According to the Commission, investigations should be carried out to establish the root causes of the violence, and those responsible must be held accountable in accordance with the law.

The Electoral Commission has further urged all stakeholders — including candidates, their agents and supporters — to conduct themselves peacefully and remain within the law throughout the campaign period and beyond.

It also called on political actors to refrain from using sectarian and inflammatory language that could incite hatred, provoke confrontation or trigger further violence.

At the same time, the Commission appealed to law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with electoral laws and guidelines by applying measures that are appropriate and proportionate to the circumstances in each area.
