Kampala – The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, has held a meeting with the new Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Regional Delegation, Mr. Kedir Awol Omar, who paid a courtesy call on him at the Defence Headquarters in Mbuya.
The discussion focused on strengthening the long-standing cooperation between Uganda and the ICRC, while also officially introducing the newly appointed head of delegation.
Hon. Oboth-Oboth commended the ICRC for its invaluable support to Uganda during the country’s turbulent past, noting that important lessons had been drawn from those difficult periods.
“Uganda is a country that went through a lot because of the turmoil experienced since independence,” the minister said. “We have built peace from those difficult experiences. We now remain a net exporter of peace and will not allow a return to instability.”
He said Uganda’s current stability is guided by four core principles — Pan-Africanism, patriotism, democracy, and socio-economic transformation — which have strengthened the nation and positioned it as a key contributor to regional peace efforts.
The Minister further praised the ICRC’s ongoing work in Uganda, especially its support in training initiatives and pre-mission briefings conducted jointly with the Uganda Red Cross Society for Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops deploying on international assignments.
He reaffirmed the government’s belief in conflict prevention and welcomed continued cooperation to promote peace and stability both at home and in the wider region.
