Mukono District has joined hands with Abigail Foundation Uganda in a collaborative effort to identify and support children with disabilities within their communities in Nakisunga Sub- County.
The initiative aims to address the challenges faced by children with disabilities including torture, neglect, and sexual abuse while calling on the public to take responsibility in protecting and advocating for their rights.
The engagement brought together sub-county leaders, including the Community Development Officer (CDO) Mr. Kyegombe Esterico, the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, parish chiefs, and social workers, all united by a shared vision — to ensure every child with a disability is identified, supported, and given a chance to thrive.
Hon. Kazungu Johnson Ssalongo, the Councilor for People with Disabilities in Nakisunga Sub- County and Acting Chairperson, expressed deep gratitude for the establishment of Abigail Foundation in the area, describing it as a “center of hope” for children with disabilities in Nakisunga and the wider Mukono District.
“Mukono South Constituency has been lacking such opportunities for a long time,” he said. “The presence of Abigail Foundation fills a crucial gap in disability support services.”
Hon. Kazungu revealed that the foundation’s new home will be located in Namakwa, where construction of a school for children with disabilities is set to begin soon. He also announced a Family Support Week in December, during which parents and caretakers will be invited to participate in various foundation programs and learn practical ways to care for their children.
He called upon parents of children with disabilities to embrace the initiative, emphasizing that disability is not a curse but a divine purpose, and pledged to work closely with Abigail Foundation and local leaders to ensure these children receive holistic support.
Hon. Mubarak Ssekikubo, Chairperson LCIII of Nakisunga Sub- County and aspiring Member of Parliament for Mukono South Constituency, applauded the foundation’s efforts, highlighting the urgent need to protect children with disabilities from abuse and neglect.
“Let us identify these children and direct them where they can receive help in education, food, and shelter through foundations like Abigail,” Ssekikubo urged.
“Every community member has a role to play. Please report any case involving a child with a disability to the GISO.”
Abigail Foundation promotes family and community support as a cornerstone of its programs. This includes community outreaches, vocational training, and workshops aimed at equipping caretakers with knowledge and skills to prevent isolation and stigma.
The foundation also trains families in entrepreneurship activities such as soap making, tailoring, and knitting, helping them earn income to support their children sustainably.
Mr. Kyegombe Esterico, CDO of Nakisunga Sub- County, commended Abigail Foundation for its commitment and urged residents to work hand in hand with the organization.
He noted that disability often leads to family stress, isolation, and even separation when not approached with understanding and collective support.
“Let us all be committed to this noble cause. Together, we can create an inclusive community where every child regardless of ability feels valued and supported,” he said.
He also welcomed government programs and NGOs to partner with Nakisunga Sub- County, affirming that the area has ready and dedicated leaders to support development efforts.
Ms. Esther Angwenyo, Administrator of Abigail Foundation Uganda, revealed that the organization currently supports 165 children 145 in the community and 60 at the center serving children with various disabilities including autism.
The foundation provides physiotherapy, healthcare support, special needs education, vocational training, family support, community outreach programs, and occupational therapy.
The engagement concluded with a strong commitment from all leaders to work closely with Abigail Foundation Uganda in identifying, empowering, and transforming the lives of children with disabilities in Nakisunga Sub- County and across Mukono District.
The partnership between Mukono District and Abigail Foundation Uganda marks a significant step toward creating a more inclusive and compassionate society.
By joining forces, leaders, parents, and the community at large are not only addressing the immediate needs of children with disabilities but also building a foundation of dignity, empowerment, and equal opportunity for all.
