Mukono, Uganda– The Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja Musafiri, Prime Minister of Uganda, Leader of Government Business, and Woman Member of Parliament for Kakumiro District, has pledged government intervention to address the urgent challenges facing Mukono General Hospital.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and other officials at Mukono General Hospital.

Speaking during her official visit to the Health facility in Mukono Municipality, Nabbanja revealed that the government will construct new standard buildings, increase the number of hospital beds, supply medicines, and provide other essential medical equipment to improve service delivery at the overstretched hospital.

The Premier’s visit followed a direct directive from President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, who was informed about the dire conditions at the facility by a journalist, Mr. Mwesigwa David of Galaxy TV, shortly after registering his candidature for another term. In response, the President tasked Nabbanja to assess the situation and provide solutions.

She was warmly received by Mukono District leaders, led by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajjati Ndisaba Fatuma Nabitaka, former Minister Ronald Kibuule, Chief Administrative Officer Ms. Elizabeth Namanda with her Deputy Mr. Muhumuza Stephen, District Health Officer Dr. Mulindwa Stephen, and Medical Superintendent Dr. Kasirye Geoffrey. Also, present were the Mukono District NRM Chairperson Hajji Haruna Ssemakula and leaders from various levels of governance.

During the engagement, Dr. Kasirye Geoffrey highlighted critical challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, shortage of medical staff, and lack of basic medical supplies, which have compromised service delivery at the hospital.

Prime Minister Nabbanja, responding to these concerns, confirmed that the government recognizes the urgency of the situation, particularly the lack of space for mothers who have just delivered. Many have been forced to rest under trees or sleep in hospital corridors due to congestion.

To address this, Nabbanja announced that immediate interventions will include the construction of a six-block maternity ward, expansion of maternity beds, provision of essential medicines, mattresses, and other supplies needed to restore dignity and efficiency at Mukono General Hospital.

After touring the facility, she assured the public that her observations would be formally reported to President Museveni on Monday, to ensure swift government action.

Prime Minister Nabbanja emphasized government’s commitment to ensuring quality health care for all Ugandans. She reassured residents of Mukono and the surrounding districts that the hospital will soon receive the attention it deserves:

“Health is a priority for government, and no Ugandan should suffer because of inadequate facilities. Mukono General Hospital will be supported to meet the growing demand for medical services. We are committed to building a health system that serves our people with dignity and efficiency,” Nabbanja stated.
