Fort Portal – Speaker Anita Among has directed the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to provide funds for the rehabilitation of Mityana-Mubende-Kyegegwa-Kyenjojo Road.
Speaking at the 30th Empango coronation anniversary of Tooro King, His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Iguru IV at Karuziika, Fort Portal Tourism City, Among directed that funds are availed for the road works within two weeks.
“When His Excellency delegated me to represent him, he offered me his chopper to bring me here. However, having been informed about the poor condition of the Mityana–Mubende–Kyegegwa–Kyenjojo road, I chose to travel by road to witness it myself. Indeed, the road urgently requires rehabilitation,” Among said.
She added, “Your Majesty, and the people of Tooro, in your presence today, I am directing the Minister of Finance, who is here with us, to secure the necessary funds within two weeks so that this road can be worked on without further delay.”
In his speech, King Oyo had appealed to Government to prioritise the 200km road as a critical road infrastructure that supports trade and cross-border movements.
Speaker Among reaffirmed that the 11th Parliament will continue to recognise and support traditional institutions through progressive legislation, representation and appropriation of resources.
“I commend the harmonious working relationship and collaboration we have continued to maintain between Parliament and the Kingdom of Tooro through your Members of Parliament from Tooro. I wish to pledge that bond of mutual collaboration between the Tooro and the Government will continue,” she said.
President Yoweri Museveni, in his speech delivered by Speaker Among, honoured King Oyo for preserving and protecting Tooro Kingdom’s rich cultural heritage and bringing the subjects together around shared interests.
“During the reign of King Oyo, Tooro has remained united and peaceful…. Therefore, I applaud the King for rallying the people of Tooro, around a shared culture, language, history and their legitimate interests, such as development, creation of wealth and jobs, etc,” Museveni said.
Museveni also underscored the importance of cultural institutions, saying their abolition in 1966 was a big blow to the people’s identity and way of life.
“The NRM made a decision to restore monarchies, because it is not possible to promote culture without involving the Kingdoms,” he said.
