Lawyers Should emulate Justice Kanyeihamba – Hon. Kyagulanyi
Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi wine has called upon all legal practitioners in the country to use their profession to protect the rights of Ugandan who are being oppressed by those hiding behind maintaining law and order.
In his key note address during
the 27th Edition of RNBLive , Press and Public Engagement organized by Uganda Law Society at their headquarters in Kampala, Kyagulanyi pointed out that it’s unfortunate that the government is using oppressive laws drafted by lawyers who think that they can’t be caught up on the wrong side of these “concocted” laws.
“The lawyers of this generation should emulate the life, the works, the words and actions of of Justice Kanyeihamba, he was a man willing to sacrifice everything including friends , material benefits , status and other things for the sake of advancing constitutionalism and rule of law in Uganda.” Remarked Kyagulanyi
He also warned the lawyers not to just look at things as they go wrong, with a hope that they will be spared, that this is totally wrong , because many of their colleagues have already experienced the suffering.
“In uganda, the law is on the paper at which it is written, If the law works for the regime, they will praise it and sing the law, but wherever the law stands in their way like it was on the Presidential Age limit, they conveniently kick it into the drain.”
Kyagulanyi further revealed that having grown up in the Ghetto’s of Kamwokya where injustice was one of the main problems faced by the people in this area, he developed a dream of becoming a lawyer with a view of solving this challenge.
“We are the Kanyeihamba’s of this generation, this is the most interesting time to be mature, let’s do what we must do.Every generation must discover the mission, the lawyers have discovered the mission and the world is looking at you on what you are going to do with it.”
Eddie Nangulu, ULS Council member from the Eastern region, in his welcoming remarks, revealed that this Public is timely especially when we are heading to electoral period. “Freedom of speech has become a major challenge in the country, our President Isaac Ssemakadde is in exile for speaking out. We are running the race to have the President return back in the country as soon as possible.” He added
Hon Gonzanga Ssewungu, the member of Parliament for Kalungu and a lawyer by professional commended ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde in absensure for his dedicated leadership which has revived the glory of Uganda Law Society.
“There was a time, not too long ago, when the Uganda Law Society was in a state of slumber—drifting, uncertain of its direction. But then came Isaac Ssemakadde, SC, whose courageous and unrelenting leadership shook us out of complacency. At that time, the leadership we had only served during the Benedicto Kiwanuka Day and then, their impact dissolved. Had we continued in that direction, the Uganda Law Society could have collapsed entirely. But today, we are witnessing a revival.” Remarked Ssewungu
Kyagulanyi was accompanied by a top leadership from National Unity Platform and members of Parliament who included Hon. Joseph Ssewungu, Hon Nalukoola Luyimbaazi as well as Party Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, Benjamin Katana among others.
