Kampala– The Appointments Committee of Parliament, chaired by the Speaker of Parliament Hon. Anita Annet Among, today vetted Mr. Samuel Akena following his reappointment as the Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons.
The vetting took place on Thursday at Parliament as part of the legal process required for senior government appointments. During the meeting, the committee reviewed his qualifications, experience, and ability to continue serving in the second highest office of the Uganda Prisons Service.
The committee will now prepare its report and communicate its decision to the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for further action in line with the Rules of Procedure of Parliament.
Mr. Samuel Akena is a senior officer in the Uganda Prisons Service and currently serves as the Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons. He has many years of experience in prison administration and leadership.
Throughout his career, Akena has served in different leadership positions within the prisons service. He has played an important role in strengthening discipline, improving professionalism among officers, and promoting respect for human rights in the management of inmates.
He often reminds prison commanders and officers to follow the core mandate of the service, ensure safe and secure custody of offenders, prevent prison escapes, and uphold integrity and accountability in their work.
In addition to his role in the prisons service, Akena also serves as a board member of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), where he contributes to national efforts in identity registration and management.
He works closely with the Commissioner General of Prisons, Can. Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, in guiding reforms and strengthening the operations of the Uganda Prisons Service.
His reappointment reflects continued confidence in his leadership and experience in supporting the development and transformation of the prisons service.
