Security leaders and local authorities in Ibanda District have agreed on a series of measures aimed at addressing persistent security challenges, particularly cattle theft and other crimes affecting livelihoods in the area.
The resolutions were reached during a comprehensive security meeting chaired by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Bamunoba Ubaldo, the Chief Political Commissar, held on Monday at the Ibanda District Hall. The meeting brought together key district leaders and stakeholders to deliberate on strategies to enhance safety and stability in the community.
Participants discussed a range of security concerns affecting the district, including cattle theft, theft of agricultural produce, land disputes, domestic violence, and other petty crimes.
Among the key resolutions was the introduction of snap road checks in collaboration with Veterinary Officers across the sub-counties. The checks are intended to regulate and monitor the movement of cattle as part of efforts to curb livestock theft in the district.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of political reconciliation among local leaders to promote unity and collective responsibility in addressing challenges affecting communities.
Stakeholders further agreed to strengthen multi-stakeholder engagement in security and community sensitization. This will involve working closely with Community Development Officers, Community-Based Organizations, and religious leaders, whose roles are considered critical in promoting awareness, resolving conflicts, and strengthening social cohesion.
Leaders also resolved that sub-counties should formulate and enforce bye-laws aimed at preventing crime and strengthening local accountability within communities. In addition, participants agreed to reactivate Sub-county Security Committees chaired by LC III Chairpersons to improve grassroots security coordination.
During the meeting, AIGP Bamunoba commended residents of Ibanda District for maintaining peace during the recent electoral process, describing it as a reflection of the community’s commitment to stability.
The security meeting forms part of an ongoing initiative by the Inspector General of Police to enhance security and community sensitization across the Ankole sub-region and the wider cattle corridor. The initiative focuses on strengthening partnerships with communities and promoting proactive crime prevention.
The meeting was attended by several key leaders, including the Resident District Commissioner, Regional and District Internal Security Officers, the LC V Chairperson, Gombolola Internal Security Officers, the District Police Commander, the Resident State Attorney, LC III Chairpersons, officers in charge of police stations, prisons officers, sub-county leaders, elders, and other stakeholders.
Officials reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property through coordinated action, unity, and vigilance.
Similar security engagements are expected to continue in Kazo and Kiruhura districts as authorities intensify efforts to strengthen security and community collaboration across the cattle corridor.
