Kampala– President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has lined up six witnesses to defend his victory in the January 15, 2026 presidential election, which is being challenged before the Supreme Court by former National Peasants Party presidential candidate Robert Kasibante.
Kasibante, in his petition, is seeking to nullify Museveni’s victory, arguing that the election was marred by widespread irregularities and conducted in non-compliance with electoral laws.
He contends that the alleged irregularities substantially affected the final results.
Kasibante also accuses President Museveni of committing several electoral offences, including bribery of voters and using abusive and derogatory language against rival candidates during the campaign period.
In response, President Museveni named senior officials of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and several polling agents as his witnesses.
Among those listed are the NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, and the party’s Director of Legal Services, Enoch Barata.
Museveni will also rely on polling agents who served at Kawempe Church of Uganda Primary School playground, Mbogo Primary School playground, Lubowa Car Parking, and Wandegeya Muslim Primary School polling stations.
The President has further indicated that he may call additional witnesses with the permission of the court.
The Electoral Commission, which is the second respondent in the petition, has lined up twelve witnesses to defend the conduct of the election.
These include the Commission’s Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Secretary Richard Baabo Kamugisha, and the Director of Technical Support Services, Solomon Muhumuza, who is expected to explain the backend operations of the Biometric Voter Verification Machines.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General has indicated that the government will call only two witnesses: the Deputy Attorney General, Jackson Kafuuzi Karugaba, and the Director of Operations of the Uganda Police Force, AIGP Frank Mwesigwa.
