Kampala — The Ministry of Education and Sports has postponed the reopening of schools for the first term of the 2026 academic year, shifting the date from February 2 to Tuesday, February 10, citing the ongoing General Elections.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, the ministry said the decision was taken to ensure the safety and security of learners across the country.
“The Ministry hereby informs you that due to the General Elections and to ensure the safety of all learners, all schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday, 10th February 2026,” Dr. Turyagyenda said.
The revised directive supersedes an earlier circular issued on January 6, 2026, which had indicated that schools would reopen for first term on February 2.
The ministry clarified that the new reopening date applies to all categories of education institutions, including international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities.
“For avoidance of doubt, this includes all international schools, tertiary institutions and universities,” the statement emphasized.
Vice chancellors, principals, head teachers, parents, guardians, school administrators, students, and the general public have all been formally notified that Term One of the 2026 academic year will officially commence on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
The Ministry urged all stakeholders to take note of the changes and make the necessary adjustments to ensure a smooth start to the academic term once institutions reopen.
