Kigezi-The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has donated scholastic materials worth 75 million shillings to 93 schools across the Kigezi Sub-Region as part of the forthcoming 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations set for 2026.

The donation was delivered by a team led by Maj. Josephat Tumukunde, Head of Education under the UPDF Joint Staff – Formal Education, Sports and Culture, during a handover ceremony at Kayungwe Primary School in Kanungu District.
Maj. Tumukunde said the initiative is part of the UPDF’s continued commitment to supporting education and uplifting communities where peace and stability have been restored and maintained.
“This is part of supporting the 1997 presidential initiative of ensuring that every Ugandan child of school-going age is in school and has access to the necessary learning materials,” he said.
The consignment included textbooks, pens, pencils, and exercise books, which were distributed to selected schools in Kabale, Kisoro, Rubanda, Rukiga, Rukungiri, and Kanungu districts. Maj. Tumukunde also called on parents to take advantage of the prevailing peace by playing a more active role in supporting their children’s education.
He further hailed partners who supported the Tarehe Sita outreach activities in the region, including Vision Group, which donated additional textbooks to schools in need.
The Head Teacher of Kayungwe Primary School, Mr. Martin Twinebyona, expressed gratitude to the UPDF, saying the support was a direct result of the peace and stability the country has enjoyed since 1981.
“We encourage parents to embrace the value of education now that our learners have been boosted with these scholastic materials,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the pupils, Head Prefect Tukamusiima Clare thanked the government for implementing Universal Primary Education (UPE) and applauded the UPDF for including their school
