KAMPALA-Justice Mike J. Chibita, Justice of the Supreme Court, on Thursday unveiled his latest book, “Leaders Grieve Last: Facing Loss, Death and Grief”, at a moving ceremony held at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

The launch was graced by Dr. Prof. Ezra Sabiti Suruma, who was the Chief Guest. In his remarks, Dr. Suruma reflected on a recent sermon he had delivered, drawing from 1 Peter 2:11: “We are only visitors here on this earth.” He hailed Justice Chibita for his courage in writing openly about personal loss, describing the work as a rare and profound gift.

Death is spiritual, life is spiritual, and we should leave it at that,” Dr. Suruma said. “I congratulate Justice Mike Chibita for the courage to write on such a difficult topic, and I thank God for the gift He has given you.”

Justice Chibita’s reflections

Justice Chibita expressed gratitude to his family and all who supported him throughout the writing process. He revealed that the book was born out of seasons of intense personal loss.

“Just when I thought the book was done, my mother passed away,” he said. “In all these experiences, I was reminded that as leaders, we grieve last because we must first comfort and lead others, and consult on what needs to be done.”

He added that writing the book was both healing and enlightening allowing him to see grief through a spiritual lens.

Perspectives on the Book*

Ms. Aryatungyisa Otiti, the editor, described “Leaders Grieve Last” as a reflective and relatable piece.

“It is not a ‘how-to’ book,” she explained. “It doesn’t provide answers but allows readers to connect and feel the experience.”

The launch also featured a panel discussion where participants shared personal encounters with grief and read excerpts from the book. Panelists included Ms. Samantha Kakuru, Ms. Ziporah Mayanja, Justice David Makumbi, and Mr. & Mrs. Wandawa, close friends of Justice Chibita.

Ms. Rachael Mwine, who moderated the event, noted that the book broadened her perspective on grief: “It helped me realize that grief takes many different forms.”

About the Book

“Leaders Grieve Last: Facing Death, Loss and Grief” explores how leaders navigate grief while balancing their leadership responsibilities. Drawing deeply from his personal journey, Justice Chibita recounts the loss of siblings, parents, and colleagues, and how these shaped his path in leadership.

The book confronts difficult questions about death, community expectations, emotional struggles, and the Christian hope found in Jesus Christ, “who wept and understands when we weep.” It invites readers to reflect on how to lead with compassion, grieve with hope, and prepare for eternity while finding meaning even in loss.
