MPIGI- The Deputy Director of Defence Public Information (D/DDPI), Major Bilal Katamba, has called on Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel to exercise discipline while using social media, cautioning that irresponsible posts attract consequences under military law.
While speaking to trainees of the Pre-Level III Military Police Course at Nsujju Mporwe Barracks in Mpigi District, Maj Katamba stressed that soldiers are bound by the UPDF’s strict standards on public communication. “Responsible use of media, especially social platforms, is now a critical part of modern soldiering,” he said.
“You must avoid careless posting on social media. As a soldier, you are subject to military law and will be held accountable for every word or image you share.”
He underscored that careless communication, particularly online, can severely damage both a soldier’s career and the broader image of the UPDF.
Praising the trainees for their resilience and commitment, Maj Katamba urged them to cultivate the skills necessary for engaging the public and media constructively. “The military and the media must work together to tell our story. If we don’t, someone else will and it may not be accurate,” he said.
He further emphasized that the UPDF’s success, both within Uganda and in international operations, has been consistently reinforced by strategic communication and open, timely engagement with the press.
