KAMPALA– There was tension at Buganda Road Court on Wednesday evening, as over 300 traders matched to the court to attend a court session where 15 of their colleagues were supposed to appear to face charges.
By 9am Buganda Road court room, and premises of court were filled beyond capacity by traders from the Kampala business area especially downtown.
Their 15 colleagues were then produced before the Buganda Road court magistrate Winnie Nankya were they were formally charged with public nuisance, a charge they denied.
Prosecution team told court that inquiries into the case is still underway, and this prompted the traders through their lawyers to ask for bail.
They were subsequently released on a non cash bail of 200,000 shillings each and their sureties were ordered to also execute a non cash bond of 500,000 shs each.
They were ordered to return to court on 15th October for mention.
From the court the traders matched to the Statistics building were they met the prime minister Robinah Nabbanja and URA officials and discussed various issues regarding high taxes imposition.
From this meeting the traders agreed to open up back their shops and start working as their issues are managed by the government.
The traders are challenging high taxes imposed on goods they import in the country which they say is excessive and can’t make them survive.
