KAMPALA, Uganda- Lawyers representing Rtd Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye and his aidee Obeid Lutale gotten stranded at high court criminal division after their clients were not produced by the prisons ahead of hearing their mandatory bail application.
The criminal division of the high court in Kampala, had earlier set today to start hearing of this application, however upon reaching court, the lawyers noticed that their clients were not around at the court.
This prompted them to inquire from the registrar who informed them that he forgot to issue the production warrant to the prison authorities.
The lawyers went directly to the presiding judge Emmanuel Baguma in his chambers who informed them that they’ll be summoned in case the bail application is fixed.
This annoyed Besigye’s legal team led by Martha Karua and decided to petition the resident judge David Matovu who asked them to re-appear on Wednesday next week for the way forward.
” Given the circumstances, we’re mourning for the passing on of our indomitable colleague Prof. Dr. George Wilson Kanyeihamba, and in the meantime we’re too busy, please bear with us and come back on Wednesday so that we get the bail application fixed” judge Matovu stated.
Martha Wangali Karua asked the Judiciary to expedite the process to have the accused persons bail fixed for hearing.
” My clients have been in detention for over 180 days, the judiciary should quicken the process to have this bail application fixed as soon as possible”
Besigye and Lutale have been on remand since November last year on charges of treason they allegedly committed in countries of Kenya, Greece and Switzerland between 2023 and November last year.
