Mengo — Days after the Electoral Commission declared Hon. Suzan Nakawuki of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) the newly elected Member of Parliament for Mawokota South, outgoing legislator Yusuf Nsibambi has announced his decision to quit elective politics following his defeat.

Appearing on a CBS Radio talk show, Nsibambi expressed disappointment with the electorate, saying his contributions to the constituency were not appreciated.
“I performed better than anybody who has ever represented this constituency. Despite limited resources, I did my best. I introduced several boreholes, upgraded many roads, and provided over 160 bursaries, but people did not value all that,” Nsibambi said.
He noted that while he won his previous election by a margin of more than 2,000 votes, his performance in the recent polls was significantly weaker, describing the outcome as humiliating given his stature and the fact that many of his peers now serve at the Supreme Court.
Nsibambi attributed his defeat partly to what he described as growing religious intolerance in the constituency. He alleged that some religious leaders mobilised voters against him on the basis of his faith.
“Hatred has again taken root in Mawokota South, spearheaded by some religious leaders whom many people regard as prophets of the Lord. They preached to people that the constituency had been taken by a Muslim, which I found very strange,” he said.
He further claimed that the alleged discrimination went beyond rhetoric, saying he was sidelined from several constituency activities while other external guests were invited.
The former MP also blamed divisions within the opposition, accusing some members of undermining his campaign by fronting rival candidates.
“Ssejemba, my young brother, would have waited for mentorship before contesting. He entered the race without sufficient resources to facilitate agents or secure enough Declaration of Results forms, which gave NRM leeway to take over the constituency,” Nsibambi said.
Nsibambi added that he would not challenge the election results in court, despite calls from supporters to do so. Instead, he said he has chosen to step back from active politics and dedicate time to his family and friends.
