Mengo– The Katikiro of Uganda Charles Peter Mayiga has given tips which Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) and the Government have to implement in order to have improved performance of the National team.
He listed four factors which could have affected the team to the extent of failing to move out of the group stages. He listed them as follows; The name CRANES is so docile, the national bird is so lazy. Why not name the National Team the SPEARS, which signifies courage; victory.
The National Team lacks a color premised on the origins of the National Team (not on colors of sponsors, Airtel; MTN etc). National teams of other countries have traditional and specific colors.
The National Team doesn’t have an anthem which the fans can echo throughout the matches.
Government parastatals and agencies shouldn’t have football clubs since they lack a fan base, and hence the Uganda Premier League can’t grow a fan base. A league that lacks a strong fanbase is never competitive and cannot produce a strong National team.
Parastatals, government agencies (UPDF; Police; URA etc) should instead sponsor community based clubs(SC Villa; Vipers; Express; Wakiso Giants etc).
