Mukono District Local Government has received an initial consignment of 80,000 hoes from the Government of Uganda as part of a nationwide initiative aimed at boosting agricultural production and accelerating poverty eradication among households.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Principal Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Kamala, revealed that Mukono District is expected to receive a total of 273,000 hoes to cover all homesteads within the district. He explained that the allocation is guided by the latest national population census, which shows that Mukono District has 273,041 homesteads, each targeted to benefit from the program.
Mr. Kamala further confirmed that the Agriculture and Production Department has already taken delivery of the first batch of 80,000 hoes, with additional consignments expected in phases. He noted that Equator Seeds is the company contracted by the Government of Uganda to manufacture the hoes.
He added that the district leadership, in collaboration with the Office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), will soon convene meetings to agree on clear modalities, timelines, and distribution guidelines to ensure the exercise is conducted transparently, efficiently, and equitably.
Addressing district officials and stakeholders, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Mukono District, Mr. Muyambi, issued a stern warning to beneficiaries against selling the hoes. He emphasized that the tools are strictly meant for farming purposes and not for commercial resale.
“Anyone intending to pick these hoes for sale should not bother. These tools are meant to help families produce food and improve their incomes,” the Deputy RDC cautioned.
He further explained that the hoes will be monitored and traced to ensure they are used for their intended purpose, in line with directives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) and the District Production Department. He made it clear that under no circumstances should the hoes be sold.
The Deputy RDC also clarified that the program is not a political activity but a government intervention aimed at improving agricultural productivity and household incomes. He stressed that politicians will not be involved in the distribution, which will instead be coordinated by the Office of the RDC, the District Production Department, and the District Internal Security Officer (DISO).
However, he called upon local leaders and community members to cooperate fully with authorities once the official distribution exercise begins, to ensure smooth implementation.
In his closing remarks, the Deputy RDC commended Mukono District Local Government for supporting and embracing government programs designed to uplift the livelihoods of citizens. He encouraged continued commitment to such initiatives that promote self-reliance and sustainable development.
He also appealed to residents, especially during the ongoing election period, to maintain peace and unity, reminding them that while elections occur every five years, communities live together every day.
The distribution of hoes in Mukono District marks a significant step in strengthening household-level agricultural production and supporting national poverty eradication efforts. With clear guidelines, strict monitoring, and coordinated leadership from district authorities, the program is expected to empower farmers, enhance food security, and improve household incomes.
District leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the initiative remains non-political, transparent, and beneficial to the intended recipients. As Mukono prepares for the full rollout of the remaining consignments, residents are urged to responsibly utilize the tools for farming, cooperate with authorities, and uphold peace and unity for sustainable community development.
