The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced that it will not endorse or support any alternative candidate for the Busiro East parliamentary seat following the disqualification of its flag bearer, Mathias Walukagga.
The decision comes days after the High Court upheld the Electoral Commission’s ruling to remove Walukagga from the list of nominated candidates for the 2026 parliamentary race. The Commission had earlier acted on a petition filed by a voter, which challenged Walukagga’s nomination on grounds that he allegedly lacked the minimum academic qualifications required by law.
Addressing supporters during a rally in Mpigi District on Saturday, NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu condemned what he described as widespread electoral injustices and declared that the party would not field a replacement candidate for Busiro East.
“After I am declared President, we shall ensure that by-elections are held in all constituencies where there were irregularities and illegalities,” Kyagulanyi said.
The announcement was made in the presence of Mathias Walukagga, who welcomed the party’s decision amid cheers from supporters attending the rally.
Earlier this month, the Electoral Commission officially removed Walukagga from the race after concluding that his nomination was unlawful due to failure to meet the stipulated academic requirements, a decision that was later affirmed by the High Court.
