Kampala– The state Prosecution has asked the High court criminal division Judge, Emmanuel Baguma not to grant bail to Rtd Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye over fears that he’s most likely to abscond.

This came after Besigye’s legal team led by Earnest Kalibbala requested court to save Besigye from spending another festive season in prison after spending close to 13 months in jail on treason charges.
Besigye presented 3 sureties who included; Kira municipality legislator, Hon. Ibrahim Semujju Nganda, Bukonzo County East legislator , Hon. Harold Muhindo and former Leader of opposition in parliament Phillip Wafula ogutu.
However in response, the chief state attorney Richard Birivumbuka told court not to release Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale on grounds that the sureties they presented to court, are not substantial.
Birivumbuka also noted that all the sureties presented are under Besigye and hence cannot prevail over him, to appear in court whenever he’s required to do so.
Hearing of the bail application is underway at the high court criminal division in Kampala before justice Emmanuel Baguma.
Besigye and his two co-accused persons have been in detention since November last year on charges of treason they allegedly committed in countries of Kenya, Greece and Switzerland between 2023 and November last year.
