KAMPALA– Following the loud out cry of the people in Kampala and various parts of the country about business man Hamis Kiggundu’s action of fencing off Nakivubo drainage channel, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has finally taken action.
In a stake holders meeting held at City Hall on Friday, officials from KCCA have ordered Ham to halt the ongoing plan and remove all the barricades and temporary fence around the channel.
“This was followed by an addendum amendments to the application under review on 31st March 2025 This innovative and futuristic proposal requires a multi-dimensional assessment with multi-agency inputs given the considerable ecological. social and infrastructural impact and the locality and the larger territorial jurisdiction of Kampala and the neighborhoods.” Reads part of KCCA letter addressed to Hajji Hamis Kiggundu dated 20th August 2025, signed by Benon Kigenyi on behalf of Executive Director
That, as Ham’s letter to the Authority on re development of Nakivubo Channel was being considered, the Businessman proceeded to hoard off the proposed project site at which preliminary works including excavation and demolitions have been undertaken without appropriate guidance and permissions.
“Please note that unregulated and unpermitted development activities pose potential risks to lte and property including flooding occasioned by obstruction of the storm drains, obstruction of businesses in the area, obstruction of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, as well as injuries to persons within the project area and damage to ths neighboring structures.”
KCCA has asked Ham to stop unregulated works as Physical Planning Directorate is working on his application.
