KAMPALA- Erias Lukwago today presided over the release of the fourth annual Kampala Road Safety Report 2024 and the launch of a new Mass Media Campaign, aimed at curbing speed in high risk areas.

The Lord Mayor stated that whereas road crashes is at crisis levels in the Country, Road Safety is yet to be institutionalized as a core agenda, and called for the participation of all stakeholders in strengthening the institutionalization of Road Safety.
He urged government to take stern action against individuals who were involved in the botched Express Penalty System (EPS), for attempting to commercialize a road safety measure for individual benefit whilst undermining the speed reduction campaign.
He observed that in the second decade of Global Action against Road Crashes aimed at reducing crashes by 50% by 2030, the statistics of increase in crashes in the city is worrying and there is need to urgently implement the Kampala Road Safety Strategic Plan 2020-2030.

The findings in Kampala Road Safety Report 2024, indicate a 2% reduction in fatalities from 411 in 2023 to 404 in 2024 with increase in crashes especially on weekends.
The Executive Director KCCA, highlighted interventions made including ; the remodelling of intersections, improving pedestrian infrastructure and other urban road safety strategies aimed at reducing road crashes and fatalities.
The function was attended by KCCA CEC members, KCCA technical team, Bloomberg Philanthropies and other Partners amongst others.
