KAMPALA– The office for the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), has joined the rest of the country to mourn the fallen legal icon, Prof George Wilson Kanyeihamba.

In their condolence message released on Wednesday morning, through their Public Relations office, they described Justice Kanyeihamba as person who was not only an eminent jurist and scholar but also a courageous defender of constitutionalism, human rights, and the rule of law.
“As Chairperson of the Legal Committee of the Constituent Assembly, he played a pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s Constitution of 1995, which restored the integrity and independence of the Office of the DPP. Later, he served on the Supreme Court (1997-2009) and made history in his diverse judgments and rulings.” Reads part of the statement
That the ODPP, also recognizes his lasting impact on prosecutorial practice in Uganda: his principled critiques and constructive engagement are shaping our ongoing reforms, particularly in enhancing independence, fairness, and accountability within the office.
“The ODPP extends its heartfelt sympathy to the Kanyeihamba family, the Judiciary, the Uganda Law Society, and all Ugandans who are united in mourning his loss. We share in the grief of the nation and celebrate the legacy of a man who remained unwavering in his principles.”
Kanyeihamba passed away on 14th July, 2025, at the age of 85.
He is expected to be laid to rest on Tuesday 29th July at his home in Buziga , a city suburb.
